Painting Expressive Color Studies with a Limited Palette

Take a deep dive with me and learn my entire approach to expressive color studies. This guide will help you to break free from color picking your reference photos and unlock a whole new world of color possibilities, all with a limited palette. This course builds upon the color theory and techniques that I teach in my first course A Beginner’s Guide to Color.

What will you learn?:

  • How to choose a limited palette that captures the specific mood you want in your painting

  • How to break free from color picking your reference photo

  • How to change the color temperature of your light source, and what impact that has on the painting

  • How to paint preliminary value studies in different lighting keys

  • How to create a series of work from just one reference photo!

- 40ml Acryla Gouache paints: Titanium White, Primary Yellow, Magenta, Cyan (cool primaries)

- 40ml Acryla Gouache paints: Deep Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Scarlet Red (warm primaries)

- Gray Scale & Value Finder (purchase a chart or create your own version using black and white paint)

- Brushes (I like a 1/2" flat brush & #6 round)

- Palette Knife

- HB Pencil (+ pencil sharpener and eraser)

- Masking Tape

- Watercolor Sketchbook (140lb, cold press)

- Pocket Color Wheel (optional)
